Walker County Softball Tournament: Top-seeds Curry, Oakman win openers

Championship game set for 3 p.m. Saturday

CORDOVA — The two top seeds emerged victorious on the opening day of the Walker County Tournament at Cordova, with Curry besting Carbon Hill 17-7 and Oakman beating Cordova 4-2, setting up today’s championship semifinal matchup at 11 a.m.

Consolation bracket play will begin the tournament at 9 a.m., with the loser eliminated.

(1) Curry 17, (4) Carbon Hill 7 (5 innings)

Top-seed Curry hit three home runs and secured a tournament semifinal berth in a 17-7, five inning win over Carbon Hill.

Alena Howse pitched five innings in the victory for the Yellow Jackets, striking out six batters.

At the plate for Curry, Alayna Key went 3 for 3 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a triple, Linley Tubbs, Kylee Trotter and Ambrey Taylor were all 2 for 3 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a home run, with Tubbs adding a double, Marissa Lawson had a hit with a run scored and two RBIs, Brenna Wakefield had a hit with two runs scored and an RBI, Lanie West hit a double with an RBI, Allie Downs recorded a hit, Jenna Madison scored a run with an RBI and Reagan Blackwell scored a run.

Santana Clark pitched two and two-third innings, with three strikeouts. Haleigh Lamon pitched one and one-third innings with a strikeout.

Offensively, Ella Hyde went 2 for 2 with a run scored, an RBI and a double, Alleigh Keeton was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a double, Reese Tittle hit a two-run home run, Brittany Parker recorded a hit with a run scored and an RBI, Mahaley Pugh had a hit with a run scored, Taygen Dozier recorded a hit with an RBI, Lamon had a hit, Clark drove in a run and Savanna Alexander scored a run with an RBI.

The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run by Tittle to go up 2-0.

Curry answered in the bottom of the inning with a score by error from Key and a two-run home run by Trotter to put the Yellow Jackets ahead, 3-2.

Holding Carbon Hill scoreless in the top of the second, the Yellow Jackets scored eight runs in the bottom of the inning, on an RBI single by Key, a score by wild pitch by Key and an RBI double by Tubbs, a two-run single by Lawson, a one-run single by Wakefield and another RBI single by Key to remain in the lead, 11-2.

In the top of the third inning, Dozier drove in a run on a single for Carbon Hill, followed by a sacrifice hit by Clark, 11-4.

The Yellow Jackets scored another three runs in the bottom of the third inning, on a solo home run by Tubbs, an RBI double by West and a score by error by Blackwell, 14-4.

In the top of the fourth, Hyde drew Carbon Hill back within single digits on a one-run double, with Curry still out front, 14-5.

Another three-run inning followed by the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice RBI by Madison and a two-run home run by Taylor, 17-5. The Bulldogs ended the game with a sacrifice RBI by Clark and a one-run single by Parker for the 17-7 final.

(2) Oakman 4, (3) Cordova 2

The Wildcats advanced to the tournament semifinal thanks to a 4-2 win over the Blue Devils.

Missy Odom pitched six innings in the win, giving up four hits and three walks, while striking out 10 batters. Jessy Aston pitched the final inning, with one strikeout.

At the plate for Oakman, Terrah Sherer went 2 for 4 with a run scored, a double and a triple, Alysa Lawhorn was 2 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI, Savannah Brown hit a double with a run scored, Jade Bonner and Odom both recorded a hit with an RBI, Ashanti Stewart had a double and Carly Woods scored a run.

Johnson pitched six innings for Cordova, recoding a strikeout.

Offensively, Camden Johnson and Lillie McGuff had a hit with an RBI each, Gracie Trotter hit a double, Shyla Armistad recorded a hit with a run scored, Kailey Johnson, and Lillian Werling each had a hit and Shayna Woods scored a run.

Oakman scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, with Sherer and Brown crossing the plate to go on top, 2-0.

The Wildcats added another in the bottom of the second inning from Lawhorn to take a 3-0 lead. Cordova replied with a run by Armistad in the top of the third inning to draw within two, 3-1.

The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the sixth inning when Lawhorn drove in Woods on a sacrifice fly, leaving the Wildcats in command, 4-1. The Blue Devils added a final run to the scoreboard in the top of the seventh when McGuff drove-in Woods for the 4-2 final.

(4) Carbon Hill 15, (5) Dora 0 (3 innings)

Carbon Hill opened the tournament with a 15-0, three-inning victory over Dora.

Santana pitched three perfect innings, striking out five batters.

At the plate for Carbon Hill, Kalee Edwards went 2 for 2 with three runs scored, four RBIs and a double, Alleigh Keeton was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Mahaley Pugh went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs, Clark and Brittany Parker both had a hit with a run scored and an RBI, Ella Hyde recorded a hit with two runs scored and an RBI, Savanna Alexander had a hit with an RBI, Haleigh Lamon, Taygen Dozier and Reese Tittle each had a run scored with an RBI and Brooke Basenburg scored two runs.

Madison Hann pitched two and two-thirds innings for Dora, with an earned run and a strikeout. Jas Parker made an appearance in the circle.

Carbon Hill scored nine runs in the first innings, two in the second and four in the third for the 15-0 final.

(3) Cordova 15, (5) Dora 3, (5 innings)

In the final game of the day, Cordova eliminated Dora with a 15-3 victory.

With the win, Cordova advances to today's elimination game vs. Carbon Hill at 9 a.m.

Sumiton Christian 9, Hueytown 0

Bailie Hall pitched five shutout innings in the win for the Eagles, giving up two hits and striking out nine batters. Kalista Cornelison pitched the final inning, allowing one hit.

At the plate, Jessie Baughan went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs, Hall was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, BG Braswell went 2 for 3 with a run scored, Maddie McCrary hit a double with a run scored and an RBI, Rylie Erwin recorded a double with an RBI, Gracie Ashley and Izzy Ingle both had a hit with a run scored, Cornelison recorded a hit with a run scored and an RBI and Alex Erwin scored two runs.
