VINEMONT — The Oakman Wildcats lost a pivotal Class 3A, Region 6 game on the road Friday night, falling to Vinemont 20-17 in overtime.

The game was close throughout as both defenses kept the opposing offenses in check with no first-quarter points.

Vinemont (5-3, 4-2) got on the board first when Brody Speer capped a 14-play, 54-yard drive with a one-yard run. Nacho Delgado added the PAT for a 7-0 Eagles lead with 6:17 left to play in the second quarter.

Oakman got its only first-half score on the ensuing possession. Kaedyn Marchbanks scored on a 3-yard run to cap off a 10-play, 44-yard drive. The extra point was no good, sending the teams to the locker room with Vinemont leading 7-6 at the half.

The Eagles extended their lead on the third play of the second half when quarterback Colby Miller turned a broken play into an 85-yard touchdown run.

Delgado added the point after for a 14-6 lead for the only score in the third quarter with 9:49 left to play.

Oakman (5-3, 4-2) stood tall on defense the remainder of the half, forcing the Eagles to turn the ball over on downs on their second possession, and then forced three straight punts.

The Wildcats passing game finally came alive in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Baylor Odom converted a fourth-down play into a first and goal at the Eagles 2-yard line with a 40-yard completion. Odom then scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to make 14-12. Odom then connected with Denzel Chatman for a 2 point conversion and a 14-14 deadlock to end regulation.

Oakman got the ball first in overtime, but after three straight incompletions, had to settle for a 26-yard Sam Smith field goal for their first and only lead of the night 17-14.

On Vinemont’s first play in OT, Miller gained nine yards to the Wildcats 1-yard line. On second down Brodie Curvin found pay dirt and gave the Eagles the win 20-17. For the game Miller had 137 yards on 17 carries, while Curvin added 76 yards.

For Oakman, Odom finished the game with 13 of 27 passing for 154 yards — 133 of those coming after halftime.

Oakman will receive a forfeit win next week over Tarrant, who is not fielding a team this season. The Wildcats will finish their regular season play on Oct. 30th at Cordova.
