HANCEVILLE — The Bevill State Bears opened the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic with a 84-74 victory over the Walters State (Tenn.) Senators on Friday night at Wallace State College in Hanceville.
Latrell Tate had an outstanding offensive performance for the Bears, scoring 42 points while connecting on 15 of 20 baskets, including 9 of 10 shots from three-point range. He also recorded three steals.
Nelson Haskin added 11 points with four blocks and a steal, Anthony Brown had 10 points with four rebounds, a block and a steal and Korri Edwards contributed six points with seven rebounds and a steal.
After a brief lead by the Senators early in the contest, the Bears took solid control with Tate scoring 28 of his 42 points to help Bevill State take a 46-34 advantage into halftime.
Although Walters State (5-4) was able to close within four points with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, good free-throw shooting by Tate and Brown help clinch the 84-74 win for Bevill State.
The Bears (6-4) close out the Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic against Eastern Florida State College this morning at 11 a.m. at Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum in Hanceville.
Bevill State’s next home game will be on Monday at 7 p.m. when the Bears host Wallace State-Selma at Glen Clem Gymnasium.
