Sumiton Christian opens tournament play with big wins in Oxford

The second-ranked Sumiton Christian Eagles opened tournament play with a pair of wins over ranked teams Friday in Oxford.

The Eagles opened with a 4-0 victory over Cleburne County, the No. 3 team in Class 4A. They followed with a 4-2 win over Vestaiva Hills, the No. 6 team in Class 7A. 

Sumiton Christian (15-8). the No. 2 team in Class 2A, will open today's pool play against Helena, the  No. 2 team in Class 6A at 10:15 a.m.

Sumiton Christian 4, Cleburne County 0

Bailie Hall gave up four hits in six scoreless innings, striking out 11 batters.

Jessie Baughan broke the scoring deadlock in the bottom of the third inning by plating three runs on a triple. Hall and Alex Erwin each had a hit with a run scored, and BG Braswell and Kalista Cornelison both had a run scored.

Sumiton Christian 4, Vestavia Hills 2

The Eagles avenged an early-week loss with a 4-2 victory over Vestavia Hills in Game 2 of the tournament on Friday.

Hall gave up to hits and an earned run in four innings with eight strikeouts.

Offensively, Hall went 2 for 2 with two runs scored and two doubles, Baughan recorded a double with a run scored and two RBIs, McCrary had a double with two RBIs, Gracie Ashley recorded a double and Braswell scored a run.

Carbon Hill sweeps Tarrant in double-header

In Game 1, Haleigh Lamon and Santana Clark combined for three innings pitched in the 20-0 no-hit victory, with Lamon striking out six batters and Clark striking out three.

At the plate, Alleigh Keeton went a perfect 3 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBIs, Savanna Alexander was also a perfect 3 for 3 with three runs scored and three RBIs, Clark went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Brittany Parker recorded a hit with three runs scored and an RBI, Ella Hyde had a hit with three runs scored, Reese Tittle recorded a hit with two runs scored and an RBI, Kalee Edwards had a hit, Lexi Sprinkle scored two runs with an RBI, Taygen Dozier had a run scored with an RBI, Angel Morrow scored a run and Lamon and Mahaley Pugh each drove-in a run.

In Game 2, Clark pitched one no-hit inning, striking out two batters in the 17-0 shutout, with Hyde striking out three batters with no hits.

Offensively, Parker recorded a double with two runs scored and two RBIs, Pugh had a hit with two runs scored and two RBIs, Lamon recorded a hit with two runs scored, Clark and Sprinkle scored two runs with two RBIs each, Morrow scored two runs with an RBI, Tittle scored two runs and Dozier score a run.

Carbon Hill (11-10) hosts Northside on Tuesday.

Hayden 4, Corner 3

Olivia Cummings pitched seven innings, giving up four hits with six strikeouts.

At the plate, Lauren Greathouse went 2 for 3, Jaden Goodwin had a hit with three runs scored, Cummings recorded a hit with two RBIs and Lauren Dill had a double with an RBI.

Meek 9, Lynn 2

Marlee Mosley pitched seven innings in the win for Meek, giving up no earned runs with nine strikeouts.

Offensively for the Tigers, Abby Phillips went 2 for 3 with a run scored and three RBIs, Savannah Smith recorded a hit with three runs scored, Christina Tyree had a hit with four RBIs, Madison Smith scored three runs and Hannah Taylor and Courtney Lane scored a run each.

For Lynn, Breanna Barton pitched four and one-third innings, giving up two hits with seven strikeouts. Gracie Jordan pitched one and two-thirds innings with two strikeouts.

At the plate for Lynn, Kamri Tittle went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a triple, Sadie Tittle was 2 for 4, Ella Brown went 2 for 3 with a run scored, Anna Hosler recorded a hit with an RBI, Phebe Burkett had a hit and Barton drove-in a run.

Winston County 4, Meek 2

Ally Blackston pitched seven innings in the win for Winston County, with no earned runs and 10 strikeouts.

At the plate for the Yellow Jackets, Emily Hill had a hit with an RBI, Makayla Lindsey recorded a hit with two runs scored, Emily Holt recorded a hit with a run scored, Olivia Wright had a hit and Madison Comeens scored a run with two RBIs.

Mosley pitched seven innings for Meek, giving up four hits with five strikeouts.

Offensively for the Tigers, Smith went 2 for 3 with a run scored, Lane, Madison Smith, Phillips and Hannah Taylor had a hit each and Mosley scored a run.
