Sumiton Christian hits four HRs in victory over WinCo

The second-ranked Sumiton Christian Eagles’ offense was unstoppable on Wednesday, recording four home runs and five doubles in 21-2, Class 2A, Area 10 win over the Winston County Yellow Jackets in Double Springs.

Bailie Hall picked up the win for the Eagles, giving up three hits and an earned run, while striking out nine batters in five innings.

At the plate for Sumiton Christian (20-9), Gracie Ashley went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and three RBIs, Kalista Cornelison was 3 for 3 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI, Jessie Baughan went 2 for 4, both home runs, with three runs scored and three RBIs, Maddie McCrary was 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and two RBIs, Izzy went 2 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI, Rylee Erwin had a double with two runs scored, BG Braswell recorded a hit with two runs scored and an RBI, Hall had a hit with an RBI, Alex Erwin scored a run with an RBI and Taylor Atkins had a run.
Alexa Stice-Edgil pitched three and two-thirds innings for Winston County, striking out one batter. Ally Blackston pitched one and one-third innings with a strikeout.

Offensively for the Yellow Jackets, Izzy Cofer had a double with a run scored and an RBI, Emily Hill recorded a hit with a run scored and Olivia Wright had a hit.

The Eagles opened the game with a three-run first inning, with Ashley scoring on a sacrifice hit by Alex Erwin and a two-run home run by McCrary to take the lead, 3-0. In the top of the second, Cornelison scored on an error, leaving Sumiton Christian ahead, 4-0.

The Yellow Jackets plated two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Cofer, then on a home plate steal by Cofer to cut the lead to two, 4-2.

Sumiton Christian scored 17 unanswered runs to end the game, starting with a two-run home run by Baughan, followed by a score by error from McCrary, an RBI single by Cornelison, and Ingle and Ashley scoring on wild pitches in the third inning, 10-2.

In the top of the fourth inning, Baughan hit her second home run of the day, a solo shot, followed by a run by Cornelison, Rylee Erwin scoring on a passed ball, scores by Ingle and Ashley and an RBI single by Hall, 16-2.

Braswell started the scoring in the fifth inning by driving in McCrary on a single, Braswell scoring on a passed ball, an RBI single by Ingle and a two-run home run by Ashley for the 21-2 final.
