Sumiton Christian earns co-area championship

Eagles pick up road win over Vincent

Sumiton Christian rode a second-half surge to a co-area championship on Thursday night, earning a 64-57 road win at Vincent in a key Class 2A, Area 10 matchup. With the win, the Eagles secured no worse than a first-place tie for the regular-season area title. Vincent can draw even with Sumiton Christian, forcing a coin toss to determine the area tournament host, with a win at Tarrant on Tuesday. The Eagles avenged an 11-point home loss to Vincent earlier this month behind the trio of Isaiah Wright, Judson Laird and JC Sheffield, who combined for 47 points. Vincent (11-10, 4-1) led 16-11 after the opening quarter, but the Eagles outscored the Yellow Jackets 21-9 in the second quarter for a 32-25 lead. Sumiton Christian (17-6, 5-1) made the lead stand, taking a 47-40 lead into the final quarter. Wright had 20 points for the Eagles, Laird added 17 and Sheffield put in 10. Next up for the Eagles is a game at Heritage Christian on Monday.
