State Softball Tournament: Oakman ousted after pair of one-run losses


OXFORD — Despite a pair of strong performances in the circle by Missy Odom and Jessy Aston, the Oakman Wildcats dropped two consecutive games on Friday in the Class 3A State Tournament in Oxford, ending a stellar year for first-year head coach Paten Williams.

The Wildcats opened the day with a 1-0 loss to Plainview, forcing Oakman to battle through the loser’s bracket. In the second game of the day, Oakman held a brief lead before Mobile Christian scored a run in two straight innings to clinch a 2-1 victory and end the Wildcats’ season.

Oakman finished the year the Class 3A, Area 10 champions, West Regional runner-up and Walker County Tournament runner-up.


Mobile Christian 2, Oakman 1

An RBI single by Bailey Webb in the top of the third inning allowed the Wildcats to gain a 1-0 advantage, but a pair of runs by the Leopards in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings secured the 2-1 victory for Mobile Christian.

Aston pitched five innings, giving up four hits with four strikeouts. Odom pitched the final inning with two strikeouts.

At the plate, Webb had an RBI single, Aston, Odom, Terrah Sherer and Jade Bonner each had a hit and Savannah Brown scored a run.

Plainview 1, Oakman 0

The Plainview Bears broke a scoreless six-inning tie with a one-run double in what would be the game-winning hit in a 1-0 loss for the Oakman Wildcats.

Odom pitched six innings for Oakman, giving up five hits with five strikeouts. Terrah Sherer recorded the Wildcats’ only hit.
