Sides, Horton open 2021 season with good performances


Opening weekend for SEC teams saw local stars making big plays to kick off the 2021 season.

Alabama's KB Sides and Auburn's Kaylee Horton had a hand in both teams' opening weekend wins, setting the tone for what could be All-Conference first team selections for both.

The Crimson Tide picked up three wins on Saturday and Sunday, beating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 10-0 then defeating the Louisville Cardinals 5-0 and 4-0 in a Sunday double-header.

Against Notre Dame, Sides had a run scored and a stolen base. In the first game against Louisville, Sides was 2 for 3 with a run scored, a double and an RBI. In the second game of the double-header, she was 1 for 3 with a run scored and a stolen base.

The Tigers beat Southeast Missouri State in a double-header on Saturday, 8-0 and 5-1, and followed with a third win in the series, 3-1, on Sunday.

In Game 1, Horton recorded three RBIs, then followed with another RBI to finish the double-header. In the final game of the weekend, Horton was 1 for 3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
