Schools, Bevill State announce weather plans

Walker County and Jasper City school systems, as well as Bevill State Community College, will be closed on Tuesday due to a winter storm warning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Walker and surrounding counties beginning at 6 p.m. today and lasting through at least 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Freezing rain is expected and ice accumulation will likely occur.

Due to widespread, expected travel issues, Walker County Schools Superintendent Dr. Dennis Willingham said Walker County schools will not be open for in-person learning on Tuesday.

"All of our employees will be working from home on Monday and Tuesday, and all of our students will be participating in virtual learning Monday and Tuesday," Willingham told the Daily Mountain Eagle on Sunday.

Students will also not attend school on Wednesday, as it remains a deep cleaning day. Parent visitation will go on as scheduled on Wednesday afternoon, unless travel delays persist, in which case the school system will announce any changes.

Superintendent Dr. Ann Jackson told the Daily Mountain Eagle on Sunday that schools will be closed on Tuesday, which was already an in-service day for faculty.

"The current plan for Tuesday, due to the forecasted icy weather, is for faculty to work from home that day," a statement read on the school system's Facebook page. "If this turns out to be a false alarm and the plan needs to be revised for faculty, an update will go out by 1 p.m. tomorrow."

Bevill State Community College campuses will be closed on Monday and Tuesday for students, faculty and staff due to expected icy conditions.

Classes are expected to resume for in-person instruction on Wednesday.

Also, college officials annnounced that minimester registration for the spring will be extended and a new start date will be announced.

Any updates to the college's plans will be shared on the Bevill State Community College Facebook page.

Each school system typically announces school closures and updates on social media as well.
