Robert Alfred Barton

Robert Alfred Barton, 89, of Cullman, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at Hanceville Nursing Home and Rehab.

Graveside service will be held Saturday, November 21, 2020, at 10 a.m. at Boldo Cemetery, with Kilgore-Green Funeral Home directing. Herman Pair will officiate.

Mr. Barton was born and raised in Boldo, near Jasper. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served honorably for two years of active service. In December 1953, he married the love of his life Edeth Godsey, and they were married for 64 years before her death in 2018. After his military service, the couple moved to Center Point, where they raised their family and attended Hilldale Baptist Church. They lived there until 1994, when they moved to a home on Smith Lake near Cullman. He resided there until his death. Robert started his lifelong career as a barber in Woodlawn, later moving to Eastwood Mall and then to Center Point. There he opened a longtime Center Point fixture, Barton’s Barber Shop. At the time of his retirement in 2010, he had sold his shop, but still worked as a barber at Hair Trimmers in Center Point. After standing behind a barber’s chair for 57 years, Mr. Barton had many customers that turned into life-long friends. After his retirement, Robert enjoyed many activities, including gardening, hunting, fishing, and enjoying lake life with Edeth and their many friends. “Paw Paw’s Lake” provided countless memories for the entire family, including children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  He had a strong Christian faith and since his wife’s death, had enjoyed reading his bible. In fact, his bible was the first thing he asked for during his stay in the physical therapy at Hanceville Rehab.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edeth Godsey Barton; parents, Willie A. Barton and Mary Lena O’Rear Barton; siblings, Elbert Barton, Dorothy Borden, Ann Hinkle, Nettie Robinson, Thomas Dewey Barton and newborn sister; and grandson, Kevin A. Barton.

He is survived by his son, Paul Barton (Sharon); daughter, Judy Smith (David); grandchildren, Chad Barton, April Birchfield (Jeremy), Amy McCoy (Chris), Thomas Clark (Shea), Cory Barton (Robin), Rob Clark (Amanda) and Leslie Smith; great-grandchildren, Austin Barton, Alyssa Cobb (Chandler), Clay Birchfield, Joshua McCoy, Kendall McCoy, Caleb Birchfield, Aidan Clark, Gabe Clark, Baylee Clark, Will Birchfield, Ela Birchfield, Jaxon McCoy, Abigail McCoy and Cooper Barton; great-great-granddaughter due in December 2020, Emmy Lou Cobb; sisters, Mary Rich, Hazel Drummond, Faye Freeman and Kaye Bost; sister-in-law, Willie L. Barton; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior project.
