Hazel Green fought off two match points and outlasted Jasper in a battle of top 10 teams in their Class 6A sub-region volleyball match Friday at Carl Cannon Coliseum.
The loss ends Jasper’s season at 42-12 and snaps the Vikings’ four-year streak of making the State Volleyball Tournament under coach Bobby Daniels.
The evenly matched teams split the first four sets before the Trojans pulled out the 26-24, 23-25, 25-23, 14-25, 18-16 victory. In the final set, No. 1 Hazel Green built a 10-7 lead, but No. 6 Jasper put together a rally, scoring six straight points for a 13-10 advantage.
The Vikings twice were one point away from advancing.
They led 14-13 and 16-15 only to have the Trojans even the score both times. Hazel Green scored the final three points of the match to earn the win and advance to next week’s North Regional Tournament in Huntsville.
For Jasper, playing in her final match for the Vikings, senior Alex Oliver had one of best matches of the season with 26 kills, 15 digs, 15 blocks and four aces. Dayion Johnson had 16 kills and four aces, Ally Grace Salors had 46 assists and two aces, Tryneti Chatman had 34 digs and Anna Fitzpatrick had six kills.
Jasper won back-to-back state titles in Class 5A before moving to Class 6A this year.

Sumiton Christian punches its regional ticket on Thursday night, edging Coosa Christian 15-25, 25-16, 25-29, 19-25, 15-12. The Eagles will play No. 1 Donoho in the North Regional Tournament in Huntsville at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
