Prep Softball: Oakman tops Carbon Hill

CARBON HILL — Oakman scored four runs over the first two innings and held off Carbon Hill the rest of the way for a 6-3 road win over the Bulldogs in their Class 3A, Area 11 matchup Thursday. Katelyn Makemson and Jessy Aston combined to hold Carbon Hill’s potent lineup to five hits and two earned runs on the day. With the win, the Wildcats close out area play with a 3-3 mark. Makemson earned the win, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits and four walks with one strikeout in 5 2/3 innings. Aston closed the game out, going the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts. The Wildcats took advantage of five walks, an error and a single to do their early-inning damage. Oakman’s Savannah Brown led off the game with a walk and came around to score on Chante Williams’ ground out for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. In the second inning, Terrah Sherer drew a one-out walk and scored on Adalyn Webb’s RBI single. Webb came around to score on an error and Brown walked and scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 advantage. Carbon Hill’s Alleigh Keeton scored on an error in the third inning, but the Bulldogs were never able to mount a rally. Oakman added a run in the sixth when Allie Barrentine’s ground out drove in Iyana Canada, who had walked to lead off the inning, making the score 5-1. Carbon Hill got as close as 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth after pinch-runner Haleigh Lamon scored on a wild pitch and Santana Clark drove in Alayna Ivie with a single. Oakman’s final run came in the seventh when pinch runner Summer Day scored on an error, pushing the lead back to three runs at 6-3. For Oakman (10-10), Brown walked twice and scored two runs, Webb was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI, Sam Kelly and Aston had hits, Williams and Barrentine had RBIs while Canada, Day and Sherer scored runs. For Carbon Hill (13-13-2), Ivie was 1 for 3 with a run, Clark was 1 for 3 with an RBI while Allie Parr, Adison Alexander and Mahaley Pugh added hits. Clark took the loss, giving up one hits and five walks in 1 2/3 innings. She allowed four runs, two earned, while striking out one. Sarah Stovall went 5 1/3 innings in relief, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits and one walk with five strikeouts. ———

No. 9 Curry 12, Fayette County 0 Alea Freeman tossed a five-inning one hitter as the Yellow Jackets earned a 12-0 road win over Fayette County on Thursday. Offensively, Linley Tubbs was 2 for 2 with two stolen bases, two doubles and two RBIs, Katie Jo Richardson was 2 for 2 with two RBIs, Laycee Cordell was 2 for 4 with a double and one RBI, Karoline Bishop was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Allie Downs had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs and Kylee Trotter added a double and two RBIs. Curry (25-10, 4-0) hosts Corner on Monday. ——— No. 1 Hayden 2, No. 7 Corner 1 Top-ranked Hayden edged Corner 2-1 in an area pitcher’s duel at Hayden High School on Thursday. The Wildcats broke a scoreless tie with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Corner scored its run in the top of the seventh. For Corner (21-9), Brantly Bonds was 2 for 3, Ivey Hill was 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored, Lauren Higgintbotham and Anna Hinkle were 1 for 3, Lauren Dill was 1 for 2 and Ashlynn Martin had an RBI. Hill took the loss, allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts in six innings. Corner plays at Curry on Monday.
