Prep Basketball: Jasper sweeps Hamilton on Senior Night

Jasper built a double-digit lead early, then held off a late Hamilton run for a 61-53 victory on Senior Night Thursday at Carl Cannon Coliseum.
The Vikings (16-11) took command in the second quarter.
Hamilton held a slim 13-12 lead after the opening period, but Jasper outscored the Aggies 18-7 in the second quarter, building a 30-20 halftime lead.
Jasper maintained its 10-point lead at 45-35 after three quarters. The Vikings didn’t trail in the second half, but that doesn’t mean the win came easily. Hamilton put together an 8-0 run that ended with a steal and a basket, cutting the Jasper lead to 45-43 with seven minutes remaining in the game.
Jasper took over from there behind Anthony Harris, who had eight of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter.
Seniors on the team are Averiun Berry, Sheldrick Cherry, Brent Geeter, Drew Martin, Harrison Saunders and Kaden Shelton. 
For the Vikings, Geeter had 15 points, John David Harrell had 10, Trinity Epps had seven, Saunders put in four, Antione Harris had three and both EJ Colbert and Shelton had two.
For Hamilton (16-8), Kenton Steele had 14 points. 
The Vikings close out the regular season at Northridge, the No. 5 team in Class 6A, today.

Jasper 51, Hamilton 45
Jasper got the hot hand in the fourth quarter and knocked off Hamilton 51-45 on Thursday night for its 17th win of the season. 
The Vikings (17-11) trailed by a point at 36-35 going into the final quarter, but outscored the Aggies 16-9 over the final eight minutes to get the win.
Seniors on the team are Jordan Gilbert, Anna Kate Herring, Cagejia Hosey and Kelsey Shelton. 
Hamilton (16-11) led the Vikings 17-10 after the opening quarter. Jasper tied the game at 23-23 at the half. 
Idaysia Mercer had 16 points for Jasper, Hallie Harrell and Hosey both had eight, Gilbert had seven, Shelton added six, Amia Porter had four and Herring put in two.
With one regular-season game remaining, Jasper has already surpassed the number of wins over the previous three seasons combined. 
For Hamilton, Mia Hollingsworth had 24 points. 
Varsity Girls
Curry 52, Winston County 35
Curry picked up a home win on Senior Night on Thursday, defeating Winston County 52-35.
The home-standing Yellow Jackets controlled the game from the start. Allie Downs had a pair of 3-pointers and 10 points in the opening quarter as Curry built a 19-10 lead.
Curry (18-7) led 32-21 at the half and 42-25 after three quarters.
Seniors on the team are Lacey Cordell, Abbey Moon and Anna Reese Woodley.
Eleven different players scored for Curry in the game, led by Moon with 11 points and 12 rebounds. 
Allie Downs had 10 points, Grayson Evans put in nine, Cam Wright added five, Cordell, Woodley and Emma Martin had four, Karliegh Miller put in two while Alayna Key, Katelyn Scola and Lana Wright each had one point.
Bella Wakefield led Winston County (12-11) with eight points, Olivia Wright had six, Breanna Wakefield, Madison Comeens and Makayla Lindsey had five and Mackenzie Blackwood added three.
Varsity Boys
No. 7 Oakman 80,  Dora 48
Oakman erupted for 33 points in the third quarter to pull away from Dora on the way to an 80-48 road win on Thursday night.
The win was No. 20 for the Wildcats.
Oakman, which moved up three spots to No. 7 in the Class 3A poll on Wednesday night, led 26-22 after a high-scoring first quarter. The Wildcats led 44-28 at the half and 73-43 after three quarters.
For the Wildcats (20-5), Skylar Hice led the team with 20 points, AJ Odom had 13 points, Cannon Taylor added 12, Ketch Jones and Dawson Crowell had eight, Christian Hubbard put in seven, both Dante Williams and Brody Harbison had four and Bubba Odom added three.
For Dora, Kaleb Towns made six 3-pointers and had 20 points, both Dee Wilkerson and Kavin Towns had 10 points and Knoxx Eustice had six.
The Bulldogs play at Curry today.

Sumiton Christian 55, Lynn 43
Sumiton Christian closed out its home season with a 55-43 victory over the Lynn Bears on Thursday night. 
The Eagles (19-10) were led by Cody Long with 19 points and Jeremy Brown with 14. 
Lynn got 21 points from Joe Aldridge.
