Dora girls outlast Curry in OT


CURRY — Curry’s big three of Brayden Newton, Luke Smith and Ryan George combined for 55 points to lead the Yellow Jackets past Dora 77-61 on Monday night at Curry High School.

Newton had 20 points and four assists and was a perfect 12 of 12 from the free throw line, Smith had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists while George cleaned up under the goal with 17 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks.

Curry (2-0) grabbed the lead in the first quarter and made it stand. The Jackets led 16-7 after the opening quarter, 28-21 at the half and 50-40 after three quarters. Curry put the game away at the free-throw line, knocking down 16 of 18 shots in the fourth quarter.

Curry was 36 of 46 from the stripe as a team while Dora was 13 of 29.

Jase Calloway finished with six points and four steals for Curry, Jacob Bentley had six points and Jacob Woder added four.

For Dora (0-1), Jayden McDavid led all scorers with 23 points and Elijah Pruitt had 10.


Varsity Girls

Dora 62, Curry 58, OT

Dora connected on six free throws in overtime to earn a 62-58 victory over the Yellow Jackets in the girls game.

Curry had a chance to win in regulation, but missed a pair of free throws with no time on the clock.

The Bulldogs sealed the win at the free-throw line. Curry cut Dora’s lead to two points at 60-58 with 5.2 seconds remaining. Makaiyah Smith followed with two free throws to put the game away.

The game was close throughout. Dora led 6-5 after the first quarter and Curry took a 21-18 lead into the half. Curry led 33-32 going into the fourth quarter and the game was notched at 53-53 at the end of regulation.

Zharia Hubbard, who had 11 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for Dora (1-0), Rukia Chapel had 15 points, five rebounds and four steals, Ja’kiyah Womack had 11 points and nine rebounds, Smith had 11 points and Lyria Meadows added nine.

For Curry (1-1), Allie Downs had 16 points, Kieren Pruett had 10 points, Alayna Key added seven and Karliegh Miller, Emma Martin and Cam Wright had six points.

The teams combined to shoot 101 free throws — Curry was 16 of 44 at the line while Dora was 26 of 57.

Dora hosts Carbon Hill on Thursday while Curry plays at Cordova, also on Thursday.
