CARBON HILL — Corner spoiled Senior Night at Carbon Hill on Friday night, beating the Bulldogs 40-38 in a back-and-forth game that came down to the final seconds.
On the girls side, Carbon Hill held off the Jackets for a 47-43 victory in the final regular-season game for both teams. Area tournaments start next week.
Carbon Hill’s boys had two chances to get the win against Corner. The Bulldogs missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer with 4 seconds left.
They would get one more shot. Following a missed Corner free throw and a timeout, the Bulldogs got a final look, but Matthew Wallace’s 3-point attempt missed the mark at the buzzer.
Both teams held the lead in the fourth quarter.
Carbon Hill’s Josh Kilgore knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Bulldogs up 37-35 with 3:54 remaining, but Corner’s Gage Bandy buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the 2:24 mark to put the Jackets back on top, 38-37. Bandy added a pair of clutch free throws with 1:15 remaining for a 40-37 lead.
Carbon Hill jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but Corner responded with an 11-0 run with Braylun Smith knocking down two 3-pointers and scoring eight points in the spurt. Corner led 13-9 after the opening quarter.
The Yellow Jackets led by as many as eight in the second quarter at 19-11, but Carbon Hill rallied. Wallace hit a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer to cut the Corner lead to 24-21 at the half.
Carbon Hill grabbed the lead at 29-28 with 3:38 left in the third quarter on a Clay Cerezo 3-pointer. Corner scored the final four points of the quarter to take a 32-29 lead into the fourth period.
The Bulldogs’ final lead came with 4:31 left after another Cerezo 3-pointer. Bandy had the final six points for the Jackets.
Bandy led all scorers with 24 points while Smith added 12 for Corner (13-13).
For Carbon Hill, Wallace led the way with 12 points, Cerezo had 11, Ishmael Jones added six, Alex Atkins had five, Josh Kilgore had three and Haden Pare added a point.
Carbon Hill's three seniors are Jacob Aldridge, Alex Atkins and Matthew Wallace.
Corner plays Dora at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Class 5A, Area 11 Tournament at Mortimer Jordan.
Carbon Hill (13-15) plays Oakman at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Class 3A, Area 10 Tournament at Winfield.
Carbon Hill 47, Corner 43
Carbon Hill grabbed the lead in the third quarter and held off Corner for a 47-43 win on Friday.
Corner led 18-17 after the opening quarter and 25-23 at the half. Carbon Hill took a 35-33 lead into the final quarter.
For the Bulldogs (14-14), Alayna Ivie had 14 points, Ally Martin had 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, Zana Aderholt had eight points, Bailey Kelley had seven points and 11 rebounds, Kensley Barron had six points and Alleigh Keeton had one point and seven rebounds.
For Corner (6-18), Lauren Higginbotham had 19 points and Sloan Courginton put in 12.
Carbon Hill's seniors are Zana Aderholt, Alayna Ivie and Balley Kelley.
Carbon Hill (14-14) plays Lamar County at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Class 3A, Area 10 Tournament at Winfield.
No. 6 Northridge 64, Jasper 53
Northridge, the No. 6 team in Class 6A, held off Jasper for a 64-53 home win on Friday night.
Jasper entered the fourth quarter down by six points before the Jaguars pulled away.
Northridge led 15-14 after the opening quarter, 33-27 at the half and 44-38 after three quarters.
For Jasper, John David Harrell had 18 points, Antione Harris, Anthony Harris and Kaden Shelton each had seven points, Harrison Saunders had six, Brent Geeter added four, EJ Colbert had three and Trinity Epps put in two.
Jasper (16-12) plays Hayden in the Class 5A, Area 11 Tournament at Mortimer Jordan at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Jasper 56, Northridge 42
Jasper closed out the regular season with its 18th win, beating Northridge 56-42 on the road Friday night.
The Vikings led 19-16 after the opening quarter and pulled away from there. Jasper (18-11) led 31-22 at the half and 41-33 after three quarters.
Alex Oliver had 16 points to lead Jasper, Idaysia Mercer had 10 points, Hallie Harrell, Kelsey Shelton and Amia Porter each had seven points, Jordan Gilbert had five and Cagejia Hosey put in four.
Jasper opens play in the Class 5A, Area 11 Tournament vs. Hayden at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mortimer Jordan.
Dora 43, Curry 42
Dora’s Zharia Hubbard had 25 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 43-42 road win at Curry Friday night.
The game was close throughout.
Dora led 13-10 after the opening quarter and 22-19 at the half. The Bulldogs took a 32-30 lead into the final quarter.
Ja’Mya Harris added 10 points for Dora (9-12).
For Curry (18-8), Allie Downs had 12 points, Abbey Moon had eight, both Emma Martin and Anna Reese Woodley put in seven and Cam Wright had six. Dora plays Corner in the 5A, Area 11 Tournament at 5 p.m. Monday at Mortimer Jordan.
Curry faces Haleyville at 6 p.m. Monday at the Class 4A, Area 11 Tournament at Fayette County.
