Prep Baseball: Sumiton Christian locks up area title

Isaiah Wright tossed a two-hit shutout, leading the Sumiton Christian Eagles to a Class 2A, Area 9 championship-clinching 2-0 victory at Vincent on Thursday. Joe Hicks provided all the offense Sumiton Christian needed in the fifth inning, belting a two-run home run that also drove in Jarrett McLain, who had singled earlier in the inning. Wright walked one and struck out five. “Isaiah pitched really well today. It was one of his best outings,” Sumiton Christian coach Lance Blair said. The Eagles have now won 14 area championships since 2001 — all under Blair’s guidance. With most of Sumiton Christian’s starters getting a rest in the second game, Vincent picked up a 5-2 win despite scoring just one earned run. The Eagles will host Dora and Winfield on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. Sumiton Christian (13-10 overall, 4-0 in area play) will open the playoffs at home on Friday, April 19 against Ohatchee (11-14), which placed second in Class 2A, Area 10. ——— Carbon Hill eliminated Carbon Hill needed two wins on Thursday to punch its ticket to the playoffs.

The Bulldogs defeated Lamar County in the opener, 5-3, but dropped the second game 5-0, meaning Lamar County earned the runner up spot in Class 3A, Area 10. In the first game, Caleb Connell earned the win for Carbon Hill, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out seven in seven innings. Laney Keeton was 3 for 4 with a run for the Bulldogs, Caleb Benson was 2 for 3 with a run and Braden Wright was 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs. In the second game, Carbon Hill was held to one hit. Ty Brooks finished 1 for 3. Kaleb Lawrence took the loss, giving up four runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks with one strikeout in 2/3 innings. ——— Jasper 7, Mortimer Jordan 5 A day after clinching the Class 5A, Area 11 championship, the Jasper Vikings closed out area play with a 7-5 win at Morris on Thursday. Jasper (22-8) built a 6-1 lead after the second inning and held off a late Mortimer Jordan rally to pick up the victory. Cam Robinson led the Jasper offense, going 3 for 5 with two doubles and three runs, Zac Durham was 2 for 4 with a double, a triple, one run and two RBIs, Landon Nix was 1 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, Slade Harbin was 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Pacey Gillott and Ryan Willcutt each finished 1 for 3. Both Tyler Thomasson and Peyton Thomasson scored runs. Tyler Thomasson earned the win, allowing one earned run in two innings. Kaden Shelton got the save, recording the final out. Jasper hosts Hueytown at 4 p.m. Monday.
