Pleasant Grove took control early and earned a lopsided 48-7 win over the Cordova Blue Devils in their Class 5A, Region 5 opener on Friday night.
The Spartans, last year’s Class 5A state runner up, scored on their first three first-quarter possessions, building a quick 21-0 lead.
Down 21-7, Cordova got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter on a special teams miscue by the Spartans. On a Cordova punt, the ball hit a Pleasant Grove player and rolled into the end zone where it was recovered by the Blue Devils for the touchdown.
That was Cordova’s one highlight.
Pleasant Grove made the most of its quick-strike, big-play offense all night. The Spartans’ first score came on a 33-yard run. Two big plays set up a 2-yard touchdown run for the second score and the third came on a 12-yard pass after a fumble recovery set up Pleasant Grove with a short field. In the second quarter, the Spartans scored on a 35-yard pass, a 23-yard run and an 80-yard punt return for a 42-7 halftime lead.
Pleasant Grove, which lost to defending Class 6A state champ Oxford 29-28 last week, is now 2-1 on the season. The Spartans host Wenonah next week.
Cordova (1-2) will play its home opener next week against region foe John Carroll.
