Our View: DME digital paywall returning

Posted

After making stories free to all readers during the height of the coronavirus pandemic early last year, the Daily Mountain Eagle's digital stories will return to a subscription-based format beginning Monday, July 19.

As before, users will be given five free stories per month before being asked to subscribe to either a print subscription, which includes access to all of the content on MountainEagle.com, or a digital-only subscription. Both options include everything on the Eagle's website, including stories, special sections and the E-Edition, which is available before the paper even hits the newsstands.

“We opened up our paywall initially in 2020 to allow our community open access to information in light of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Publisher James Phillips said. “We then sold a sponsorship to allow the site to remain free for several more months. That sponsorship has now ended, so we will again put items behind the paywall. Certain items like obituaries and classifieds will remain free to view.”

Beginning August 1, keeping in line with industry standards across the nation, the Daily Mountain Eagle will require all readers, subscribers or not, to register an account on MountainEagle.com. A free account will not be charged any subscription fees but will be required to access the five free stories per month.
