OAKMAN — Leaders of the Town of Oakman enlisted some special helpers at Oakman Middle School Tuesday to help decorate ornaments for the town's Christmas tree.
Tiny, paint covered hands were working hard at the school Tuesday to beautify solid colored Christmas ornaments to look like snowmen. Their ornaments will be displayed on Oakman's Christmas tree downtown, ahead of the town's tree lighting this Friday night.
Oakman Mayor Cory Franks, along with Oakman Town Clerk Lisa Lockhart and Oakman Senior Center Manager Evelyn Garrett, helped children at Oakman Middle paint some ornaments Tuesday. They have also made visits to other classrooms over the past few weeks.
Franks said the ornaments are about much more than a simple craft project for students to enjoy.
"Since I became mayor, community outreach has always been a top priority," Franks said. "This is just a way for kids in our community to get involved with what we're doing in the town."
"The kids have really enjoyed it," Lockhart added.
The Oakman Christmas tree will be lit Friday night at 5:30 p.m. downtown, and everyone is welcome to attend. Franks said pastors have been invited to share the story of Christmas during the ceremonial, annual event.
In the event of rain, the event will be rescheduled.
In less than two weeks, Oakman will also host the town Christmas parade on Monday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. in their downtown district. To enter a float in the parade, call town hall at (205) 622-3232.
