Oakman’s Skylar Hice caught fire early as the Wildcats built an early lead and defeated Carbon Hill 71-57 in their Class 3A, Area 10 Tournament game at Winfield High School on Tuesday.
Hice had 13 points in the first quarter, helping Oakman jump out to an insurmountable 15-1 lead to start the game.
Oakman (22-5) now faces host team Winfield (27-4) in the area tournament championship game set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Winfield advanced with a 70-32 rout of Lamar County.
In other games involving local teams, Curry edged Fayette County 68-66 to keep its season alive.
Altamont eliminated Sumiton Christian 63-58, Haleyville defeated Cordova 66-52, Mortimer Jordan ended Corner’s season 63-52, Sulligent topped Addison 57-51 and Red Bay ousted Winston County 59-48.
Against Carbon Hill, Oakman led 22-8 after the first quarter and 37-23 at the half. The Wildcats scored 24 points in the third quarter, building a 61-37 lead going into the fourth.
No. 7 Oakman got 24 points from Hice, AJ Odom added 16, Cannon Taylor had 12 points, Christian Hubbard added six, Dawson Crowell had five, Bubba Odom put in three, both Trey Thomas and Derrick Hubbard had two and Ketch Jones scored a point.
For Carbon Hill, which closes the season at 13-16, Clay Cerezo had 16 points, Zac Lawhorn added 15, Bryson Prince had seven, Blake Wright had six, Matthew Wallace had five, Ishmael Jones had four and Josh Kilgore had three.
Curry 68, Fayette County 66
Weston Horton had 11 points in the final quarter as the Curry Yellow Jackets fought off elimination with a 68-66 comeback win over Fayette County in the Class 4A, Area 11 Tournament at Haleyville on Tuesday night.
Horton finished with a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds and Luke Smith knocked down six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points, leading the Yellow Jackets to the area tournament championship game against Haleyville set for 7 p.m. Friday.
The Lions (12-17) eliminated Cordova 66-52 on Tuesday.
Curry (10-15) led Fayette County 18-11 after the opening quarter, but the Tigers fought back for a 34-33 halftime lead. The Jackets trailed 56-51 going into the final quarter, but Curry outscored Fayette County 17-10 over the last eight minutes.
Blake Darty had nine points for Curry, Andrew Stewart added five and Ethan Wideman had four points.
For Fayette County (12-14), Myron Strawbridge made eight 3-pointers and finished with 31 points.
