Jones rises to COVID-19 challenges

Posted

LPN Rita Jones has been caring for the senior community for 30 years and has spent the past two years serving at Lakewood Senior Living of Jasper.

Jones is the resident care coordinator at Lakewood.

“Working with our seniors is my desire and very rewarding. I have dedicated my career to this mission,” she said.

Like all senior care facilities that are taking COVID-19 precautions, Lakewood has been screening everyone who enters the facility, as well as its residents. Visitors have also not been allowed at Lakewood.

“Our residents and families have been so understanding during this time.

Although visits are not possible, we use social media, FaceTime, and other methods so our residents are able maintain as much family, church, and friend interaction as possible,” Jones said. “I will always be touched by how well our staff, residents, families, physicians, volunteers and community responded to this pandemic. It makes me very proud to be a nurse and working with our seniors.”

Jones has also made a great sacrifice at home to protect her family.

“Vigilance is so important.  We all maintain social distancing, wear face

coverings when in the community to grocery shop, and other techniques,” she said. “I stayed at the facility around the clock for 11 days, have not seen my children and grandchildren, including my brand new 3-month-old grandson in order to protect those I love.”

Jones said there has been such a learning curve during this time, but she says support from multiple people is helping her meet daily challenges.

“The unknowns and interpreting how to apply the mountains of guidance to our

particular situation has been and continues to be a challenge,” Jones said. We are blessed that we’ve received tremendous support and guidance from our ownership and community that has enabled us to maintain our mission. I have such an appreciation for our freedom.”

She concluded, “We can do about anything when we have trust, understanding and a dedication to mission.”
