Walker County Schools Superintendent Dr. Joel Hagood took a moment Thursday evening to address his coming departure from the school system.
Hagood was named the new president of Bevill State Community College last week, effective Jan. 1, 2021.
"It's definitely bittersweet to leave an organization where you've spent almost 25 years, but I am excited for the opportunity that I've been given at Bevill State," Hagood told board members at the school system's regular meeting on Thursday.
Hagood spoke of how much he has enjoyed working with board members to make decisions in the best interest of everyone involved with Walker County Schools.
"I never dreamed how good this board would be to work with. You've always been open to discussion," he said. "We've been honest, we've argued, but I don't think we've had a single issue."
He continued, "I've been here for over two years finishing Dr. Adkins' term out and then my almost two years as superintendent. We have not had a single vote that was not a unanimous vote. That is almost unheard of. I applaud you, and I appreciate you."
"I know that, without a doubt, good leadership is here," Hagood concluded.
Walker County Board of Education Chairman Brad Ingle thanked Hagood for his service.
"I know I speak for the whole board here. We want to congratulate Dr. Hagood on his new venture and new position that he will be assuming at Bevill. We appreciate your service to students," Ingle said. "Do know that it will be OK. We're going to keep moving forward. We've done a lot of good work here, and we're going to continue that."
Ingle told the Daily Mountain Eagle last week that the board will be working to appoint a superintendent for the school system to finish out Hagood's term.
No update was provided at the meeting on Thursday, regarding when an interim superintendent could be named.
