Gwendel Carden “Corky” Hagen passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 14, 2023, in Jasper.

Mrs. Hagen was born to the late Durward and Virgie Carden in Fordsville, Ky., on October 2, 1928.  She met and married the late Hubert D. Hagen in Beaver Dam, Ky., in 1947.  The Hagens moved to St. Louis, Mo., several years later for Mr. Hagen’s work with Peabody Coal Company.

In their years in St. Louis, Corky had a number of interests:  she dabbled in art, garden clubs, tennis, golf, and earned her private pilot’s license.  She and Hubert moved to Jasper in the 1970’s when he took a new position with the Drummond Company.

In Jasper, Corky participated in multiple community projects, including an anti-litter campaign, various charity efforts, development of the gift shop at the then new Walker County Hospital, and was very active in supporting Republican Party efforts in Walker County.  She was also named Alabama’s “Best Dressed Woman” in the early 1980’s.

She is survived by son, Dr. Michael D. Hagen (Barbara) of Lexington, Ky.; daughter, Marsha A. Hagen of Jasper; granddaughters, Dr. Laura H. Dean (Chris) of Cleveland, Ohio, Sandra A. Hagen, MBA, of Johnson City, Tenn., and Sarah Savoy of Baton Rouge, La.; and great-grandchildren, Emma and Jameson Dean of Cleveland, Ohio, and Ellie Savoy of Baton Rouge, La.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to the Walker Area Community Foundation of Jasper or The Arc of Walker County.
