Girls regional basketball: Vigor ousts Dora

Posted

Dora ran out of gas in the fourth quarter as Vigor earned a 68-47 victory in their Southwest Regional Tournament game on Friday in Mobile.

The Bulldogs didn’t have an answer for Vigor’s Janiya Labyzon, who finished with a game-high 40 points. She scored 20 points in each half.

Dora kept the game close through the first two quarters. The Bulldogs trailed 16-14 after the opening period and 33-27 at the half. Vigor led 47-38 going into the final quarter.

Traditionally, the game would’ve been held at Alabama State’s Acadome, but the opening round region games were moved to high school sites due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Though the season ended on a losing note, coach Justin Blevins’ team enjoyed a turnaround season while advancing to the regional for the first time in more than a decade.

“The girls just bought in,” Blevins said. “We won county and the area — and made the regional for the first time since 2005 or 2006. That’s a pretty good year for Dora basketball.”

Blevins loses two seniors on this year’s team, star player Zharia Hubbard, and Makaiyah Smith.

Dora closes the season 19-7 in Blevins' first year at the helm. The Bulldogs were 10-13  last season.

Playing in her last high school game, Hubbard finished with a double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds to go along with two blocks, Rukia Chapel had 14 points, Smith put in 10 points sand Ja’Kaiyah Womack added 11 rebounds.

For Vigor (17-7), which advances to the 4A Southwest Regional Tournament championship game in Montgomery, Sonya Tanner had 14 points.
