Gertha Mae Sanford, 96, of Cordova, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Ridgewood Health Systems.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at 12 p.m., at Goodsprings Church of Christ Cemetery, directed by Kilgore-Green Funeral Home.
Gertha was a member of Goodsprings Missionary Baptist Church for 75 years. She enjoyed working in her yard, planting flowers and growing a garden. She loved spending time with her family and friends.
She was preceded in death her husband, Alonzo Sanford; children, James Loyal Sanford and Bettie Sue Sherer (Floyd Ray); grandson, Jason Wayne Sanford; parents, Henry Dayton and Mattie Maybell Smelly; siblings, Ima Oviagene Smelly, Jerlene Whitlock (Paul), Ozella Dean Odom (Johnney) and Jackie Zane Smelly; and daughter-in-law, Vickey Sanford.
She is survived by her son, Jerry Wayne Sanford; grandchildren, Larry Ray Sherer (Amy Lora), Sonya Dee Downs (Troy), Christopher Wayne Sherer, James “Jim” Ashley Sanford (Elaine), Shara Georgette Hollman (Anthony “Bubba”) and Jerri Elaine Sanford, 10 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Carol Smith Sanford; sister-in-law, Betty Stover Smelley; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
