Sumiton Christian tops Dora, ties Hueytown

SUMITON — Gardendale is off to a perfect start after the opening day of the Bevill State Invitational.
The Rockets earned wins over Cordova and Oakman in pool play for a 2-0 start.
Both Sumiton Christian and Hueytown are 1-0--1 after playing to a draw in Friday’s opener. Both Carbon Hill and Oakman are 1-1 going into the final pool play games set for Saturday morning. Oakman rallied past Carbon Hill 4-3 and stuck with Class 6A power Gardendale for six innings, dropping a 3-2 decision.
Today’s games start at 8 a.m. with Sumiton Christian facing Pleasant Grove at Sumiton Christian’s Aderholt Field and Cordova battling Oakman at Cordova High School.
Hueytown plays Pleasant Grove at 9:30 a.m. at Sumiton Christian and Carbon Hill takes on Gardendale at 9:30 a.m. at Cordova.
Sumiton Christian 2, Hueytown 2 (Five-inning time limit draw)
Anna Calloway drove-in two runs on a double in the top of the fifth inning to be the deciding factor in a 2-2 time-limit draw with the Hueytown Golden Gophers.
In the circle, Calloway pitched five innings, giving up seven hits, two runs, a walk and striking out four batters.
Offensively, Calloway was 2 for 3 with the two-run double, Angel Whitlow and Zana Aderholt were 1 for 2 with a run scored each and Taylor Whisonant and Kalista Cornelison each recorded a hit.
Sumiton Christian 2, Dora 0
Amber Hayes and Kaley McCrary hit one-run doubles to help the Eagles top the Dora Bulldogs, 2-0, in five innings.
Mak Miller pitched five innings in the win for Sumiton Christian, giving up two hits, three walks and striking out 11 batters.
Offensively, McCrary went 2 for 2 with the RBI double, Hayes was 1 for 2 with an RBI double, AK Tyree went 1 for 2 with a double and a run scored, Whitlow was 1 for 2 with a run scored and Jessie Baughn had a hit.
Jasmine Parker pitched four innings in the loss for Dora.
At the plate for the Bulldogs, Callie Simmons was a perfect 2 for 2.
After two scoreless innings, Hayes drove-in Whitlow in the bottom of the third inning, matched by McCrary driving-in Tyree in the bottom of the fourth inning for the 2-0 win.
Carbon Hill 4, Cordova 0
Karlie Ratliff pitched five shutout innings in the win for Carbon Hill, giving up four hits, five walks and striking out seven batters.
Offensively for the Bulldogs, Allie Parr went 2 for 2 with an RBI, Alayna Ivie was 1 for 2 with a run scored and a double, Ratliff was 1 for 3 with a run scored, an RBI and a double, Santana Clark went 1 for 3 with an RBI and Alleigh Keeton and Abby Martin scored a run each. Raven Clark pitched four innings for Cordova, giving up five hits, four runs, three walks and recording seven strikeouts.
At the plate, Abby Sargent, Gracie Trotter, Anna Key and Shayna Woods each had one hit.
Oakman 4, Carbon Hill 3
Iyana Canada drove-in three runs in the Oakman Wildcats’ 4-3 victory over the Carbon Hill Bulldogs.
Jillian Gurganus got the win for the Wildcats, pitching seven innings with seven hits, three runs and one walk.
At the plate for Oakman, Shalayiah Waid went 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI, Adalyn Webb had a double with a run scored, Canada recorded a hit with three RBIs, Jade Bonner and Samantha Kelly both had a hit each and Chante Williams scored two runs.
For Carbon Hill, Sarah Stovall pitched six and one-third innings, giving up five hits, four runs and four walks with six strikeouts.
Offensively, Keeton went 2 for 3 with a run scored, an RBI and a double, Ratliff was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Clark had a hit with two runs scored and Adison Alexander, Mahaley Pugh and Ana Grace Guy had one hit each.
Gardendale 3, Oakman 2
Oakman held its own against the Rockets in a narrow 3-2 loss.
Gardendale took a 2-0 lead after three innings, but Oakman tied the game with runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
The Rockets scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth with a one-out double.
Oakman’s Jessy Aston went 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Both Chante Williams and Terrah Sherer finished 1 for 3 with a run.
Gardendale 14, Cordova 0
Abby Sargent pitched five innings for Cordova, recording one strikeout.
At the plate, Clark went 2 for 2 while Anna Key recorded a hit.
