CORDOVA — Cordova fans hoped to see both the pageantry of homecoming festivities and a Blue Devil victory on Friday night.
Instead, the Fairfield Tigers spoiled the fun, handing the Blue Devils a lopsided 47-0 region loss.
Fairfield started fast, picking up 42 yards on the second play from scrimmage on a long run. Cordova’s defense stood tall for the next three downs before Fairfield bullied its way for a tough first down on 4th and 2 from the 4 yard line. The Tigers punched it in the endzone from a yard out on the next play and then nailed the PAT to make it 7-0.
Cordova’s first offensive attempt was thwarted by two sacks in three plays. The second sack resulted in a fumble from quarterback Cody Headrick, gifting the ball to Fairfield at the 8-yard line.
Fairfield threw a touchdown on the next play. The PAT was blocked by Elijah Thomas to keep the score 13-0.
Fairfield continued to have success on offense throughout the night using a balanced attack. The Tigers managed 207 total yards through the air, while gaining over 150 yards on the ground. Fairfield managed two additional scores to run the score up to 27-0 before the Blue Devil defense stepped up to produce a three and out with 6:14 remaining in the first half.
The defense got a boost on a sandwich sack by Ashton Nash and Elijah Kilpatrick on 3rd down.
The defensive effort seemed to create a spark for the Cordova offense on the following drive. Headrick completed a beautiful 17-yard wheel route to I’Keylan Stewart and followed it up with a 13-yard strike to Cade Naramore. It looked like the Blue Devils were going to have their first touchdown of the game when Headrick floated a 50-yard bomb to a Blue Devil receiver, but it was bobbled and dropped.
Fairfield took advantage after that drop by running their two-minute offense to perfection.
The Tigers scored on a 5-yard pass with only one second remaining in the first half to push their lead to 34-0.
To start the second half, Headrick had a screen pass intercepted after it was tipped at the line of scrimmage. The Blue Devil defense had his back on the next couple of drives however.
The Cordova defense forced a three and out after a sack by Jack Gable on the ensuing drive and then Jordan Perrin recovered a Fairfield fumble at the 2-yard line to prevent another Tiger score.
Cordova finally seemed to have something going on offense when Headrick completed an absolute laser to Cade Naramore for 41 yards on 3rd and long at the end of third quarter. The turnover bug struck the Blue Devils again two plays later though, resulting in a 45-yard fumble recovery for a Fairfield touchdown.
One more late touchdown from the Tigers sealed the deal and closed the scoring 47-0.
Cordova (1-8, 0-7) will wrap up the season at home next week against county rival Oakman.
