Dorothy Nell Meek

Dorothy Nell Meeks, 94, of Jasper, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022 at her residence.

Dorothy "Dot" began her teaching career in 1947 in Dovertown. She taught elementary grades at Curry, Central, and T.R. Simmons, retiring in 1989. During the course of her career she continued to increase her level of education, obtaining a master's and an AA certificate in education. Dot was known for her love of teaching reading to her first grade students. The 1988 T.R. Simmons Annual was dedicated to her in recognition of her as a loyal friend and teacher to all her students and collogues.

Her Christian walk began in July 1964 while she and her family were attending Manchester Baptist Church. Dot and her husband Raymond also actively served in ministries at Farmstead Baptist Church for 42 years.

Dot was a faithful financial supporter of the Alabama Children's Homes and actively involved in the Walker County Camp of the Gideons lnternational. As a member of the Auxiliary she helped give Bibles to graduating nurses and place Bibles in nursing homes and doctors' and lawyers' offices. She also accompanied Raymond to many churches in Walker and adjoining counties to present the Gideon program. Dot and Raymond have provided approximately 4000 Bibles for the ministry's purpose to bring all people to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at 12 p.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. in the Collins-Burke Chapel. Burial will be at Walker Memory Gardens. Mark Presswood and Richard Meeks will officiate.

Mrs. Meeks was preceded in death by a baby boy; parents, Thomas M. Beaird and Gladys Wilson Beaird; siblings, Louise Wheat (husband Melvin Wheat), Margaret Ann Beaird, Thomas Beaird, Jr. and Gail Beaird (wife Marylin Beaird); brother-in-law, Clayton Jackson.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond L. Meeks, Sr.; sons, Raymond Lesley Meeks, Jr. (Becky) and Ricky G. Meeks (Anita); sisters, Barbara Daniel and Donna Jackson; grandchildren, Michael Meeks (Katie), Rachel Pendergraft (Robert), Meredith Urquhart (Brian), Richard Meeks (Jill) and Russell Meeks (Ashley); great grandchildren, Kayley Urquhart, Camden Urquhart, Ian Urquhart, Geneva Pendergraft, Judson Pendergraft, Katharina Pendergraft, Isaac Pendergraft, Raymond Meeks, Daisy Meeks, Noah Meeks, Amelia Meeks and Elijah Meeks.

Pallbearers will be Michael Meeks, Russell Meeks, Brian Urquhart, Robert Pendergraft, Barry Daniel and Bradley Daniel.
