The Dora Bulldogs got a big region win on the road Friday night, with a 39-27 victory over the Fultondale Wildcats at Tarrant High School.
Dora (4-2, 2-1) got on the board first at the 6:54 mark of the opening quarter when Jamarcus Goodmon dove in from the 2-yard line. Brayden Williamson kicked it to 7-0.
Fultondale, playing its first game in three weeks, answered on the next possession when Vennis Smith got loose on a 22- yard run for a 7-7 tie. Williamson pushed the Bulldogs’ lead to 10-7 with a 26-yard field goal to close out first quarter scoring.
Dora opened the second quarter with Jayden McDavid hitting Dee Wilkerson with a 26-yard strike to extend the Bulldogs lead to 17-7.
Dora quarterback Garrett Hogeland, replacing an injured Logan Fowler, had an outstanding game.
Hogeland hit Wilkerson down the seam with a 43-yard dart to push the Dawgs lead to 24-7 with 3:47 left to play before halftime.
Fultondale however wasn’t finished. The Wildcats drove 65 yards in 4 plays and Smith dove in from the 1 and narrowed the Bulldog lead to 24-14.
The Wildcats then fell on the ensuing kickoff, which Dora couldn’t handle. Just before the half quarterback Jharod Johnson found Rashaad May for a 16-yard score, sending the teams to the locker room with Dora clinging to a 24-20 edge.
Fultondale got the first break of the second half, intercepting a Bulldog pass at their own 19-yard line.
Six plays later, Deontae Shufford broke loose on a 33-yard run to give the Cats their first and only lead of the night 27-24.
Dora got the lead back quickly on its next set of downs. Dylan Jeff finished off an 8-play, 57-yard drive with a 4-yard run, putting Dora back in front 30-27 after a missed PAT.
Dora added two fourth quarter scores. Goodmon, who finished the night with 177 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, scored on a 1-yard run and Williamson added his second field goal of the game from 40 yards out to give Dora 39-27 win.
Hogeland finished the night with 6 of 10 passing for 105 yards and one touchdown. Wilkerson added over 150 all purpose yards and two scores.
Johnson led Fultondale with 18 of 32 passing for 195 yards and one touchdown.
Dora will be back home next Friday night in another Class 4A Region 6 contest as they host the Ashville Bulldogs (2-4).
