DORA — The Dora Bulldogs wrapped up a playoff berth with a 35-20 Class 4A Region 6 win on Thursday night at Horace Roberts Field.
Things started slowly for both teams with no first quarter scoring.
Dora (5-2, 3-1) opened the scoring on the first play of the second quarter as Jayden McDavid capped off a Bulldogs 38 yard drive with a 1 yard run. Brayden Williamson kicked it to 7-0.
Dora took over again on a short field at the Ashville 21-yard line following a good defensive stand and a short punt. Jamarcus Goodmon found pay dirt with an 11-yard touchdown run at the 2:45 mark. Williamson kicked it to a 14-0 lead.
Ashville (2-5. 1-3) took over at midfield on the ensuing kickoff. It took five plays for Dylan Harris to find Hayden Phillips down the right sideline for a 34 yard strike. Grayson Simpson converted the PAT sending the teams to the locker room with Dora leading 14-7.
Ashville took the second half kickoff at their 30-yard line and drove to the Dora 29 before the Bulldogs defense rose up and stopped them on fourth down.
Dora wasted no time extending its lead. On third down quarterback Garrett Hogland found Dee Wilkerson behind the defense for a 66 yard strike and a 21-7 advantage.
Ashville would answer on its next drive. Taking over at the 20 yard line, the Bulldogs put together a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Harris dove over from the 1-yard line. The play was set up by a 42-yard run by Adrianne Hernandez. The extra point was no good leaving Ashville trailing 21-13. The Hogland to Wilkerson duo connected again on the ensuing drive. This time on a 9-yard pass. Williamson made it 28-13 headed to the final frame.
Ashville would make it interesting midway of the fourth quarter. Harris again found a wide open Phillips for a 51-yard score. Simpson added the point after to draw Ashville within a score at 28-20 with 8:35 left to play.
Ashville would intercept a Dora pass on first down at the 46-yard line. Five plays later Goodmon capped another huge night with another 11 yard touchdown run. Williamson kicked it to a final of 35-20.
“I’m very proud of our team and the effort they gave tonight. We’re really proud to clinch a playoff berth tonight” said Dora head coach Bart Lockhart.
