OAKMAN - The Town of Oakman will hold its annual community Christmas tree lighting and parade on Thursday, Dec. 5.
The third annual tree lighting will take place at 6 p.m. and will feature a Christmas concert performed by the Oakman High School marching band.
"We want to really encourage people to get involved," Oakman Mayor Cory Franks said at Monday's council meeting. "We have a lot of churches here - I feel like we have enough people in Oakman that if we encourage everyone to participate, there is plenty of time leading up to the parade that if we can get everyone involved it will be a success."
The parade will begin immediately following the community tree lightning.
In the event of rain, the town will announce a makeup day later.
In other news from Monday's meeting, the council approved for the new town clerk, Jennifer Wade, to attend a clerk training conference in Gulf Shores in early December, as well as a grant writing class.
"It's important because of what it costs to write grants and having the runaround to find a grant writer when you can just have someone in office that understands how to write a grant and it takes to do it," Franks said. "I think that this training is important."
