After two successful seasons as a member of the Bevill State basketball team, Nelson Haskin announced his commitment to play for the Columbus State Cougars on Saturday.
Located in Columbus, Ga., the Cougars compete in the Peach Belt Conference — which includes programs from North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia at the NCAA Division II level. Columbus State finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 18-13 and 11-9 in conference play, falling to Peach Belt Conference champion Lander in the championship game.
“First, I want to thank God for blessing me with the ability and opportunity to play the game I love. I also want to thank all of my coaches at Bevill State who helped me elevate my game,” Haskin said during his commitment announcement. “Thank you to all of the schools who have recruited me, I appreciate your belief in me as a student athlete. Lastly, thank you to my family, friends and teammates who have been by my side through this entire process.”
Haskin’s presence on the court helped lift the Bears to new heights since the program restarted three years ago. During his sophomore campaign, he led the Alabama Community College Conference in rebounds at 10.5 per game, was second in blocks at 3.2 per contests, ninth in steals at 1.5 per game and averaged 12.4 points per contest.
His performance in his second season with the Bears earned him a spot on the ACCC All-Conference Team and ACCC North All-Conference Team.
Bevill State finished second in the North Division of the conference with an 18-11 record.
