Bernard's voted Best Men's Boutique in 'Bama

Bernard's Store for Men was recently voted the Best Men's Boutique in the state by readers of Alabama Magazine.

Bernard's, located in historic downtown Jasper, celebrated 70 years in business in 2019. Bishop Chavers, publisher of Alabama Magazine, notified Bernard's owner Rusty Richardson of the honor in a letter dated June 25.

"From all of us at Alabama Magazine, we would like to formally congratulate you on your recognition as one of the 'Best of Bama' for 2020! Each year our readers vote for their favorite people, places, businesses and events in various categories and from all over the state. This year they chose you as the Best Men's Boutique in Alabama!" Chavers wrote.

Bernard's is featured in the July/August issue of the magazine.

The Best of Bama includes over 40 winners divided into four categories: arts and entertainment, charity and professional, food and drink and shopping.

Advertised as "the state's luxury lifestyle magazine," Alabama Magazine has been published since 2011.

The July/August 2011 issue included Green Top Bar-B-Que and Tallulah Bankhead as among the best things Alabama had to offer. Leo & Susie’s Famous Green Top Bar-B-Que made the cut in “Bama’s Best B.B.Q Joints” and Tallulah Bankhead was the subject of the issue's “Heritage” section.

The first official Best of Bama award winners were selected in 2012.

Alabama Magazine is based in Birmingham and is distributed throughout Alabama as well as in Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Mississippi.

Bernard Weinstein opened Bernard's Store for Men in 1949.

Current owner Rusty Richardson began working at the store in 1974 when he was 16.

"He (Weinstein) taught me about loving people, about being genuine, about being concerned about people and what they were going through in their lives. He was always an encourager, so I've always tried to be an encourager," Richardson told the Eagle in October for an article on the 70th anniversary. "People trust us, and they come in to dress their loved one that just died or dress all their family for a big wedding coming up, special occasions, parties and anniversaries. We've been so fortunate to be able to be a part of all that."
