Aliceville holds off Winston County, 39-38

Winston County scored two touchdowns over the final three minutes, but came up short on a 2-point conversion in the waning seconds in a 39-38 loss at Aliceville in their 2A, Region 5 showdown Friday night.

Winston County trailed 39-18 early in the fourth quarter after an Aliceville score with 10:36 left.

The Yellow Jackets began the comeback on their next possession with Brooks Bonds scoring a rushing touchdown. Austin Owens followed with a fumble recovery for a score The 2-point conversion cut the Aliceville lead to 39-32 with 2:29 remaining.

Winston County got the ball back at the 1:33 mark and Owens followed with a 79-yard run on the next play, cutting the gap to a single point at 39-38. The Jackets’ two-point conversion pass failed, leaving Aliceville with the lead.

Winston County recovered the ensuing onside kick, but the Jackets were unable to capitalize as Aliceville held on, claiming the region title in the process. Winston County placed third in the region.

Owens had the first two touchdowns for the Jackets, scoring from 3 yards out and then again from 80 yards, making the score 12-12 in the second quarter. Aliceville scored twice before the half for a 26-12 lead at the break.

Owens scored from 46 yards out in the third quarter to pull the Jackets within a touchdown at 26-18. Aliceville scored the next two touchdowns setting up Winston County’s late rally.

The Yellow Jackets host Falkville in the regular-season finale next week.

Berry 43, Meek 6

Berry jumped on top of Meek with four first-half touchdowns and coasted to a 43-6 home victory Friday night.

With the win, the Wildcats close out 1A, Region 6 play with a perfect 7-0 record.

Berry (8-1) led 29-0 at the half and 36-0 after three quarters. Meek got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.

Meek (1-8, 1-6) closes out the regular season at Sumiton Christian next week.
