The 21st Century Afterschool Program at Oakman Elementary/Middle School released balloons and blew bubbles on Tuesday afternoon. The event marked what would have been the 6th birthday of Conner Lynn Earnest of Oakman, according to his cousin, Oakman teacher Autumn Custred. The Pre-K member of the program died June 10 in an four-wheeler accident at his residence, she said. Nearly 100 children and adults, including members of Conner's family, gathered on the school's baseball field, where Conner once played ball. There they released the balloons and then blew bubbles, which the family felt the children would enjoy doing.  more
District 5 in Jasper on Monday, Halloween, held its first District 5 Trunk or Treat in Coke Oven Park, thanks to the organizing efforts of Kita Kindred and Cheryl Hall. Officials estimated more than 150 people - and maybe more - attending. Children and families enjoyed not only the traditional trunk or treat candy fest, but also experienced a hayride, inflatables, games, a cake walk, snacks, grilled sausages and hot dogs. Sponsors and donors were thanked for their help in launching the annual event.  more

The East Walker Chamber of Commerce will not cross Highway 78 during its annual Christmas parade, but will switch sites each year between Sumiton and Dora, according the Executive Director Chee-Vee Whitfield.
