The Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard in Cherokee is advertised as the only cemetery of its kind in the world. It began in 1937 with the burial of Troop, a half redbone coonhound. Since then, more than 300 beloved hunting dogs have been laid to rest beneath the trees in a clearing that once served as a popular hunting camp. A celebration is held in the cemetery each Labor Day. At least three requirements must be met to have a dog buried in the cemetery. The owner and a witness must declare that the dog is an authentic coon dog, and a member of the Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard, Inc. must be allowed to view the deceased coonhound. According to the cemetery website, when asked why he didn't allow other dogs to be buried in the cemetery, Troop's owner, Key Underwood, replied, "You must not know much about coon hunters and their dogs if you think we would contaminate this burial place with poodles and lap dogs."
