Bankhead Middle School recently held a successful canned food drive. The school's goal was to collect 1,000 cans, but 2,852 were donated. Mrs. Pate's homeroom collected 1,000 cans and won a pizza party. The second place for donations went to Mrs. Chatham's class for collecting 491 cans, and Mrs. Scarberry's class brought 408 cans, earning third place. Bankhead Principal Amber Freeman said the cans were donated to Cordova's food bank at Long Memorial Methodist Church.

Parrish Elementary School hosted a Thanksgiving luncheon on Thursday.  Many students were joined by their parents, grandparents or other family members to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal. The school's gymnasium was transformed into a dining room by lunchroom staff and custodians who worked hard to decorate tables with festive tablecloths and decor.  Officials with the Walker County Board of Education and members of the Parrish Town Council were also invited to the special occasion.  more

Students in East Walker are giving back to their community for the Thanksgiving holiday. Students at Dora High School collected just over 1,000 boxes of macaroni and cheese that will be donated to the Mission of Hope in Dora. Sumiton Middle School's students collected hundreds of boxes as well to be donated to the nonprofit.  Dora High School's Future Business Leaders of America students also partnered with Kindred Hospice to help create holiday food baskets. Items in the baskets will be distributed to members of the community for Thanksgiving.  more
PARRISH — Charter Communications made a visit to Parrish Elementary School on Thursday to present special donations and unveil a new opportunity for community members to receive affordable Internet access. more
