Daniel Lamar Lane, 54, was the second person to drown on Smith Lake this year.
Officer Bart Lindsey of the Alabama Marine Police said Lane was sitting with his feet off a rock bluff near Duncan Bridge when he fell into the water around 11:30 p.m. on Monday.
“He fell about 15 feet, swam 25 feet and went down,” Lindsey said.
Officials from the Alabama Marine Police, Arley Police Department, Arley Fire and Rescue and Winston County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene.
The search for Lane lasted from midnight until 3 a.m. and resumed at 8 a.m on Tuesday. He was recovered by members of the Smith Lake Task Force at 10:30 a.m.
Lindsey said Lane was found in 38 feet of water in the area where witnesses, which included his fiance and two friends, saw him go down.
The incident is under investigation.
“We believe alcohol was a contributing factor,” Lindsey said.
