When Angela Glover Romano was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, it shocked those closest to her. She is young, active, healthy and her risk factors for the disease are low.

As those shock waves rippled through Sumiton City Hall, where she works for the city’s water and gas department, Romano leaned on her faith as a Christian. “He’s got this,” she said confidently, over and over as people asked about her health, her treatment plan and the prognosis.

Her belief that God would see her through the intense treatment plan of chemotherapy and surgery has been tested, but remains strong as she finishes the chemo and begins a series of surgeries on July 10.

“He does have this,” Romano said. “Even when the doctors said I wouldn’t make it through 12 straight weeks of chemotherapy, He carried me through 12 straight weeks of chemo.”

She said throughout the treatment she has occassionally felt “rough” but hasn’t been sick, as often happens with chemo. She also hasn’t had to miss work because of illness from the aggressive treatments, just for regular doctors appointments.

Her friends, family and coworkers rallied behind her, picking up the message and running with it. They began a grassroots campaign to sell bright pink T-shirts with the message emblazoned on the back as a way to help offset some of the treatment costs and the lost income when Romano will be forced to miss work next month to begin the series of surgeries. The front of the shirt has a small pink ribbon that says “Find the Cure,” and the back features a large image of Jesus and the phrase “He’s Got This.”

The shirts cost $12 for children’s sizes, $15 for adult sizes small, medium and large and $20 for adult sizes extra-large and up. To purchase a shirt or make a donation, call any of the ladies at Sumiton City Hall or the Sumiton Water Department at 648-3294.
