Some of the top high school basketball teams in the state will converge on Curry High School on Tuesday.

Eleven high schools, ranging in size from Class 4A to Class 7A will make the trek to Walker County for  a play date at Curry.

Games will start at 8 a.m. with the last game set for 7 p.m. All three Curry gyms — high school, old high school and middle school — will be running all day with basketball games. Along with the varsity teams, eight JV teams and five freshman teams will also take part.

Schools from Madison County, Etowah County, Jefferson County, Colbert County, Limestone County and Tuscaloosa County will be represented.

Curry’s basketball team will not be in action.

Sparkman, the third-largest school in the state, will make the nearly 100-mile trip from Madison County to Curry. The rest of the field includes:  Spain Park (7A), Gadsden City (7A), Athens (6A), Gardendale (6A), Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (6A), Minor (6A), Muscle Shoals (6A), Northridge (6A), Woodlawn (6A) and Bibb County (4A).

“I want to create an atmosphere in the Curry community where basketball is important and everyone is excited to watch us play. In order to do that we have to play at a higher level than we did this year,” Curry basketball coach Scott Brewer said. “ I want to bring in as much basketball as I can, not only for my players, but the whole community to see. I thought it would be pretty cool to host a big school play date and try to bring in as many of the best teams in the state as possible.”

Five of the schools — Spain Park, Athens, Minor, Woodlawn and Bibb County — advanced to regional tournament last season.

“My thought was to bring in 12 teams, three from the Tuscaloosa area, four from the Huntsville area, four from the Birmingham area and one local team. So I just started calling every school in those areas asking if they would be interested in coming. There was no way I could have imagined it would take off like it did. Of the 11 schools coming, nine are ranked in the top 50 in the state. All have elite talent and I’m excited to see these teams coming into Curry gymnasium’s and play.”

One-hour games will be held throughout the day starting at 8 a.m. The new high school gym will host all varsity games, the old high school gym will host varsity and JV games and the middle school gym will host JV and freshman games.

Two varsity games start at 8 a.m., Bibb County vs. Sparkman in the new high school gym and Athens vs. Northridge in the old high school gym.

“I can only hope we have a great turn out of people from the community and surrounding areas to come see this elite group of talent. I want to say a special thanks to my principal Mr. (Rod) Aaron for allowing me to host not only this play date, but five of the play dates we are hosting.”
