Inaugural ‘Move More, Live Better’ event set for Saturday

The Walker County Health Action Partnership is hosting its first “Move More, Live Better,” event this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Memorial Park in Jasper.

The event is for all ages and will feature swimming, biking, walking, yoga, Crossfit and zumba to promote the importance of physical activity.

There will be a bike raffle to give away a boy’s bike and a girl’s bike as well as other giveaways. Attendees are encouraged to bring their bikes, bike helmets and swimsuits.

At 9 a.m. there will be a choice of zumba, a one- or two-mile adult walk or an 11-mile bike ride at Memorial Park. Yoga and swimming will also be offered at the Memorial Park Natatorium.

At 9:45, a kids’ bike registration and safety training session will be held. The kids’ bike ride will begin at 10 a.m. and will cover one or two miles surrounding Memorial Park. The roads surrounding the park will be closed to traffic. Parents are encouraged to ride with their children, but volunteers will be available to assist children who do not have an adult to ride with them.

An adult water aerobics class will also begin at 10 a.m. in the Natatorium.

At 11 a.m., Crossfit instructors will begin classes for adults.

There is no cost associated with any of the classes and WCHAP Coordinator Chris Nuss hopes the public will turn out for a day she believes will be fun for the community, as well as beneficial.

This initiative is aimed at improving the overall health of Walker County, which currently ranks 66 out of 67 Alabama counties in health and well-being. The county is also higher than the state average in diabetes, premature death and work days missed due to illness or poor health.

The Walker County Health Action Partnership works to make the county healthier by improving access to health foods, promoting activity and wellness and improving the environment to make that activity safer and more enjoyable.
