Walker girls tennis team takes second at state

Walker’s girls tennis team fell just short of its first state championship since 2003, placing second in the State Tennis Tournament at Mobile on Friday.

The girls will bring home the runner-up trophy after finishing with 60 points, six points back of state champion St. Paul’s. Muscle Shoals was a distant third with 39 points.

Walker’s No. 5 Sarah Katherine Warren won a singles championship, beating Briarwood’s Kateleigh Calloway 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match.

The No. 2 doubles team of Jeana Burton and Warren defeated Muscle Shoals 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match for the title.

Walker’s No. 1 doubles team of Kallie Beall and Lexie Dillard lost in the finals. In singles, No. 4 Olivia Hayes lost in the finals to St. Paul’s Monnie Slaton while No. 6 Abby Hayes lost in the finals to Cullman’s Lilli Watson.

St. Paul’s won the boys title with 55 points followed by Cullman with 47 points and Spanish Fort with 45.

Walker’s boys placed seventh with 19 points.

Walker’s No. 4 Eli Matthews advanced to the finals, losing to St. Paul’s Benton Weinacker 6-0-6-2 . No. 5 Ned Sanders lost in the semifinals as did the No. 2 doubles team of Andrew Wiginton and Matthews.
