A Maddox Middle School eighth-grader died late Sunday night from injuries she sustained in an ATV crash earlier in the day.

Gracie Abbott, 13, was airlifted to Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham after the accident, which happened near Old Glory Drive, just off Fall City Road.

Abbott was driving the ATV but lost control and the vehicle flipped, throwing Abbott and two of her cousins from the vehicle, officials said.

Abbott was airlifted to the hospital with a severe head injury, but efforts to revive her failed.

Abbott was pronounced dead at 10:15 p.m., Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe said.

On Monday, counselors were made available to students at Maddox Middle School who were struggling to deal with Abbott’s death.

Funeral services for Abbott are scheduled for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Blooming Grove Baptist Church in Curry. Visitation will be held at the church from noon until 3 p.m.
