Walker County Softball Tournament: Curry, Cordova earns top seeds

The seeding for the 2014 Walker County Softball Tournament is set following a coaches meeting on Wednesday, with the Curry Yellow Jackets, Class 5A’s top-ranked team, and the Cordova Blue Devils, Class 3A’s sixth-ranked team, getting top billing.

Curry (29-4) is the top seed in the six-team, double-elimination tournament set for Oakman High School, with Cordova (21-11-1) receiving the second-seed selection. Both teams have first-round byes.

The Oakman Wildcats (15-12), Class 2A’s eighth-ranked team, are the fourth-seed and open the tournament against the fifth-seed Dora Bulldogs (13-20) at 10 a.m. Friday. in the tournament’s first game. The winner plays Curry in the second round.

The Carbon Hill Bulldogs (16-10-1) enter the tournament as the third-seed and play  the sixth-seeded Parrish Tornadoes (3-9) at noon. The winner plays Cordova to conclude the day one winner’s bracket action. A pair of elimination games are set for Friday at 6 and 8 p.m.

Day two action begins on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.. The tournament championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Curry has gone 7-0 over the last two years, beating Parrish by forfeit in the championship game last year and knocking off Carbon Hill in the 2012 title game.

Admission to the tournament is $5, with weekend passes available for $8.
