Hello, my name is Debra Hatfield. I had a wonderful story written about me by Mr. Dale Short, printed in the Daily Mountain Eagle on Sunday, March 2. He did a great job of saying exactly what I said and did not say what I asked him not to, which leads to this apology.
My story is just as he mentioned. I have been rescuing since I was very, very young. I would get in trouble with my dad for bringing them home. Do you know how hard it is to hide a barking dog?
Up until about two years ago, I have been doing it all by myself. I began to feel overwhelmed, so I prayed for God to please, please take it away, close my eyes and/or my heart. Instead, he sent angels. One year at a time He keeps sending more folks.
First, Mindy Gilbert, great lady and great voice for our four-legged friends.
Second, Susie Vann. I can’t begin to say enough about Susie and our Walker County Humane Society. They are actually responsible for all the spay/neuters for the last two years. They have provided kennels for fostering, and Susie calls me often to see if I need food.
Third, R.U.F.F., a new rescue group in town. They are responsible for the transport of the last four of my rescues to fosters in sunny Florida. I said “no kill shelters” in the article, and I was not correct with that statement.
Also, Walker Strays is a Facebook page belonging to a sweet young lady named Kara. She has more passion for animals in her little pinky than most people have in their whole body.
These groups are amazing and are doing amazing work.
I am very, very proud and grateful to know all these people. When I said I don’t take donations, I meant I don’t receive monetary compensation. That doesn’t mean I don’t receive help. God has put all these wonderful folks in my life and I am thankful.
Please accept my apology for saying the wrong thing and not saying enough of the right things.
God Bless. Have a nice day
Spay and neuter and feed a stray!
