Ergle’s big game leads Eagles to win in opener

Sumiton Christian’s Jenna Ergle put on a show in the Eagles’ season opener at Oakman on Thursday.

Ergle was a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate with two home runs, two doubles and seven RBIs as the Eagles knocked off Oakman 15-5.

Ergle also got the win, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out 10.

Sumiton Christian (1-0) also got a big game out of Kendall Beth Sides, who was 2-for-4 with four stolen bases and an RBI, Jessie Boone was 2-for-5 while Savanah Langston, Katlyn Sides, Kendell Hamm, Abbie Brewster and Kirsten Click added hits.

Sumiton Christian, which has advanced to the state tournament each of the last five years, travels to Auburn for a tournament today. The Eagles play Auburn and Hazel Green today and open with Brewbaker Tech on Saturday.

BASEBALL

Sumiton Christian 15, Meek 4

Sumiton Christian used a 10-run sixth inning to put Meek away en route to a 15-4 road win over Meek on Thursday.

Evan Love was a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate with three RBIs while Tristan Alexander was 2 for 3 with two doubles for the Eagles.

Grant Shepherd got the win on the mound, striking out three in five innings for his first varsity victory.

Sumiton Christian (2-3) hosts Fultondale at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Carbon Hill 17, Curry 9

Carbon Hill baseball coach Hunter Smothers earned his first career win on Thursday as the Bulldogs picked up a 17-9 road win over Curry.

Jacob Mitchell had a big day at the plate for Carbon Hill (1-2), going 4 for 6. Austin Jackson was 2 for 3 and Bradley Burditt was 1 for 5 with five RBIs. Colton Plunkett earned the victory, allowing one earned run in 5 2/3 innings.

Carbon Hill hosts Oakman at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
