James Alan Tidwell, 75, of Arley, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, with his family by his side. He was born on Dec. 27, 1938, in Birmingham to the late James Ernest and Inus Nell Goodwin Tidwell. His mother passed away shortly after his birth, and he was lovingly raised by his father and stepmother, the late Ruth Moss Tidwell.

He married Norma Gail Cordes of Jasper in 1959, and they were happily married for 54 years.  

Tidwell spent his entire career in sales and management roles at GE Appliances and lived in a number of different cities, including Louisville, Nashville and Atlanta. He retired in 1996 and moved to Smith Lake. He was a loving son, husband and father. He was also a licensed general aviation pilot who loved flying, “tinkering” and spending time at the lake.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Gail Tidwell of Arley; aunt, Clara Mae Porter of Addison; aunt, Vera Dell Bryant of Pinson; daughter, Anita Newby of Marietta, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Cheri and Phillip Cobbs of Cullman; grandchildren, Kayla and James Cobbs of Cullman; grandson, John Michael Newby of Marietta, Ga.; and his best friend, James Short of Jasper. 

Visitation will be held today, Feb. 26, 2014, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home.

The funeral service will take place Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Kilgore-Green Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association Inc., P.O. Box 9575, Wilton, NH 03086-9575.
