Everett, McGough vying for state championships

HUNTSVILLE — Dora’s Austin Everett and Sumiton Christian’s Matthew McGough entered the 2014 AHSAA State Wrestling Tournament as champions of their respective Super Section weight classes.

Both are one step away from leaving Huntsville’s Von Braun Civic Center with their first state championships after two victories catapulted them into today’s finals matches.

Of the two title contenders left in the Daily Mountain Eagle coverage area, McGough found himself in the most intriguing match up of the da — battling fellow East Walker contender Vernon Brown of Dora to earn one of the 160 lbs. class’ two final spots.

McGough earned his shot after an emotionally-charged match, while Brown will look to lock up the third place spot in the consolation bracket.

Also competing in the consolation bracket today are Recio Winchester, Chase Warren, and Caleb Lauderdale of Dora and Dalton Absher of Corner.

Dora Recio Winchester, 113 lbs. (56-15)

Lost in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket, advanced to the consolation semifinals by forfeit. He will face Justin Calimlin (20-18) of Parkway Christian today in the consolation bracket.

Austin Everett, 126 lbs. (54-4)

Picked up a 9-3 win by decision in the quarterfinals, then scored a pinfall victory in semifinals with four seconds left in the clock. He will face Kennon Reese (45-8) of Tallassee for the state championship.

Chase Warren, 138 lbs. (40-13)

Won his quarterfinal match via 8-4 decision, lost in the championship semifinals. He will face Austin Foote (34-21) of Madison County today in consolation bracket.

Vernon Brown, 160 lbs. (50-19)

Won his quarterfinal match by 8-5 decision, lost in the championship semifinals. He will face Kenny Brady (29-12) in the consolation bracket today.

Caleb Lauderdale, 170 lbs. (27-12)

Won quarterfinals match by pinfall at the 4:37 mark, lost in championship semifinals. He will face Orlando Carmichael (46-15) of Weaver today in the consolation bracket.

Daylan Brasfield, 220 lbs. (38-28)

Was eliminated from the tournament after two consecutive losses.

Sumiton Christian

Matthew McGough, 160 lbs. (34-6)

Won quarterfinals match by pinfall at 1:25 mark, won semifinals match by pinfall at 3:41 mark. McGough will face BJ Thomas (47-7) of Tallassee today for the state championship.

Corner

Dalton Absher, 126 lbs. (20-8)

Lost in the championship quarterfinals, won in the consolation quarterfinals by pinfall at the 1:56 mark. He will face Payton Entrekin (39-7) of Ohatchee in the consolation semifinals today.

Walker

Nicholas Guiditta, 170 lbs. (31-15)

Was eliminated from the tournament after two consecutive losses.
