Berta Lucille Harbin Townsend, 86, of Nauvoo, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at her residence. She was born on Nov. 22, 1927.

Berta grew up in Nauvoo at the Harbin Hotel, built by her father. Since the hotel was no longer in operation when she was born, she had her own special room and many rooms in which to play. One of her passions was her father’s 1926 Cadillac, which she entered every year in the Nauvoo Car Show and Nauvoo Christmas Parade. Another favorite hobby was spending time at Smith Lake with all her grandkids and great-grandkids. She gave most of them their first swimming lessons.

Berta and husband, Grady, owned and operated a service station and cafe on No. 5 Highway in Nauvoo for more than 30 years. People from all over came to eat her hamburgers, BBQs and fried pies and still speak of those visits today. She was a friend to so many and you always knew where you stood with her. She spoke her mind but would help you anyway she could. Berta will be missed by all but especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who loved her dearly.

Funeral services will be at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home in Jasper Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Funeral service beginning at 1 p.m in the Kilgore-Green Chapel with burial following in the Ashbank Cemetery in Nauvoo. There will be no graveside services. Dr. Ken Bentley will officiate.

Berta was preceded in death by her parents, W.O. and Alta Dodd Harbin; brothers, Charlie, Clarence, Frank, W.O. and James Harbin; sisters, Minnie Cheatham Robins, Mary Lee Davis and Elizabeth Moore; father-in-law, Chess Townsend.

She is survived by her husband of 71 years, William Grady Townsend; stepmother-in-law, Sara Ruth Townsend; her children, Betty and Jimmy Ray Atkins of Prospect and Pat and Ray Hinds of Carbon Hill; grandchildren, Lisa and Wade O’Mary, Wade and Karen Atkins, Darrin and Dawn Hinds, Trisha and Christian Gann, Mark and Lisa Atkins, Kiley and Jodi Hinds and Mandy and Frankie Williams; great-grandchildren, Anna and Mark Prevost, Hunter Hinds, Grant Hinds, Sarah O’Mary, Chandler Gann, Parker Hinds, Caroline Gann, Jakob Atkins, Molly Kate Atkins, Kimbrell Hinds, Mary Harbin Hinds, Katie Claire Gann, Travis Atkins, Wyatt Williams and Amelia Jane Williams; three sisters-in-law, Emilie Harbin, Peggy Harbin and Marie and Garland Guthrie; special caregiver, Tammy Hulsey; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
