Berta grew up in Nauvoo at the Harbin Hotel, built by her father. Since the hotel was no longer in operation when she was born, she had her own special room and many rooms in which to play. One of her passions was her father’s 1926 Cadillac, which she entered every year in the Nauvoo Car Show and Nauvoo Christmas Parade. Another favorite hobby was spending time at Smith Lake with all her grandkids and great-grandkids. She gave most of them their first swimming lessons.
Berta and husband, Grady, owned and operated a service station and cafe on No. 5 Highway in Nauvoo for more than 30 years. People from all over came to eat her hamburgers, BBQs and fried pies and still speak of those visits today. She was a friend to so many and you always knew where you stood with her. She spoke her mind but would help you anyway she could. Berta will be missed by all but especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who loved her dearly.
Funeral services will be at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home in Jasper Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Funeral service beginning at 1 p.m in the Kilgore-Green Chapel with burial following in the Ashbank Cemetery in Nauvoo.
