He was a member of Carbon Hill Masonic Lodge 494 and a member of the American Legion Post 101 in Carbon Hill. Baker was a UMWA retiree who had worked for 40 years, retired from Gorgas No. 7 coal mine, was a WWII veteran and had served in the U.S. Navy.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Collins-Burke Chapel with burial at Carbon Hill Memorial Gardens. Scott McCullar will officiate.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph P. Baker, Sr.; mother, Lillian Baker; sisters, Christine Goodwin, Luseal Buzbee, Nelda Lee and Mabeth Mullins; and brother, Cecil Baker.
He is survived by his wife, Inez Baker of Carbon Hill; daughters, Janice Sims (Dell) of Eldridge and Phyllis Kelley (Michael) of Carbon Hill; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dell Sims, Michael Kelley, Greg Sims, Drew Sims, Blake Sims and Dallas Kelley.
